Bach or Laibach?
Posted in Music at October 19th, 2008 ()Johann Sebastian Bach has even be referred to as “the father of music”. I don’t agree with that, music has no fathers or mothers, but Bach was surely a brilliant mind and helped music alter and progress. Some or many of his themes have been used even in rock songs.
Laibach are nothing like Bach. There is a controversy as to what they are and represent, and i do not wish to put a label or tag to them, they don’t deserve it. To me they are musical geniuses. If you ask them, they will probably answer with one of their song’s lyrics:
“We are no ordinary type of group, we are no humble pop musicians, we don’t seduce with melodies, and we’re not here to please you.
We have no answers to your questions, yet we can answer your demands. We don’t intend to save your souls, suspense is our device. We are time…
From Moses to Muhammad, from capital to Nato, acropolis to opus dei, from Marx and back to Plato. From the golden age to the age of steel, from beginning to the end, from zero to infinity, the first to the seventh continent.
From no solution to revolution, the red star to star wars, the turning point to the point of no return, new order to a brave new world.
Mechanical to digital, from poltergeist to zeitgeist, from god’s will to evil, and from superstars to the anti-christ, we are time…
We are the thieves of the lost horizons, we are the mirror of the deadly curse
We shall give you nothing, and in return we’ll take even less. But when the beat stops and the lights go out, and when we leave this place, you will be left here all alone, with a static scream locked on your face. WE ARE TIME.”
They seem to want to identify themselves as a project, an audiovisual experience. Their interviews are always controversial. Mostly they try to shake our minds and make us think differently. Or maybe they just want to test us, see if they can manipulate us, or how they can affect us.
What does Johann Sebastian Bach and Laibach have to do with each other? Well it seems that Laibach tried to interpret Bah using electronic drums and keyboards. A merging of the past and the future. It sure is well made but also interesting. The title of this new project is Kunst Der Fuge, by Laibach.
If you have already heard Laibach, don’t try to compare it anything they made before. This is different, but I think you’ll enjoy it. And I read that the live shows are very artistic, so if it happens to be anywhere near you, I propose you book tickets.
